I love that yoga is a simple practice. All you need is a yoga mat. Here are some thoughts about how to choose one that’s right for you.

Tip 1 – Having your own mat is great because you can use it at home, it is more sanitary and you can build the memories and energy of your personal mat.

Tip 2 – Thickness matters – if your knees hurt when kneeling, a thick mat can ease the discomfort. The same is true in any position where you feel discomfort against the floor.

Tip 3 – Stickiness matters – If you like standing poses and downward dog type poses, you will really benefit from a stick mat. A sticky mat prevents the feel from slipping away from each other and makes the poses easier and safer. I find that some mats get a little stickier after you use the mat for a few weeks, so give it a little time.

Tip 4 – Hot Yoga Mats – Mats that are specially designed for hot yoga, will perform better when you are sweaty. You will be able to feel the difference. You may also want to try a yoga towel designed to go over your mat and absorb the moisture to help keep you from slipping.

Tip 5 – Any Mat Will Work – but as with most things, the more you spend the better quality mat you will get. If buying responsibly is important to you, you may want to do a bit of research.
